The Karen Organization of San Diego is a truly community based organization, with the refugees from Burma who we serve taking ownership over our programs. KOSD Programs are designed based on the expressed needs of our community members. The community is represented by the Community Leaders Committee which advises KOSD staff on the priorities and needs of refugees from Burma living in San Diego.
OBJECTIVE: Develop a system for community self-help for refugees from Burma.
Services & Initiatives
Facilitate community meetings for Karen, Karenni, and Burmese speakers
Recruit volunteers from within and outside of the community
Empower community leaders and youth leaders
Hold various workshops and give presentations regarding youth issues, education, financial literacy, health, community safety, useful community resources, and so forth through collaboration with other service providers, based on expressed needs of KOSD clients.
Pga Guh Nyo Ko Nah (Community Leaders Committee)
The Community Leaders Committee is fundamental to the work that we do. This counsel of leaders is made up of refugees from Burma who have emerged as leaders within the community in their new home. The Community Leaders Committee meets to discuss the needs within the population of refugees from Burma living in San Diego. KOSD strives to ensure that the committee is representative of the make-up and values of the whole community. The main objectives of this committee are to address the following goals:
- To act as a liaison between the Community Members and the board of directors
- To represent the culture and community values of the membership
- To advise and inform the board
- To serve as a consultant for the organization objectives and decisions
- When appropriate, the board refers to the Pga Guh Nyo Ko Nah committee when addressing matters of cultural sensitivity
