Dear Friends,
Karen Organization of San Diego (KOSD) was officially established as a nonprofit organization in 2009 by Karen community members themselves with the support of allies who had been working closely with this population. Today, San Diego is home for more than 2,000 refugees from Burma who fled the violence and persecution. Violence against many ethnic minority groups in Burma, including Karen, Karenni, and others, by the Burma government and military have never stopped since the beginning of the civil war in 1949.
Over the past 12 years, our community members have thrived and built beautiful community and home here in San Diego by leveraging their resilience and mutual support including support from the KOSD. Many have navigated complex healthcare and school systems, learned a new language, started new careers, and advocated for themselves and their neighbors, all while maintaining their own culture, values, and traditions. And, even after 12 years since the beginning of the KOSD, our work is still critical to ensure that refugees and newcomer families are safe, truly welcomed, and have access to equal opportunities to participate in economic, social, and civic life.
If you haven’t already, I would like to ask you to make a donation to support our work today. Any donation level is meaningful to us, and your contribution encourages us to continue our work.
With sincere gratitude,
Nao Kabashima, Executive Director
